How the calculator works
The calculator compares two proportions: bust to hips, and waist to hips. Each of the five shapes has a typical point on both; your result is the shape you sit closest to. The shoulder check nudges the call between pear and inverted triangle, which tape measurements alone can miss.
| Body shape | Bust/Hips, typical | Waist/Hips, typical |
|---|---|---|
| Hourglass | ≈ 1.00 | ≈ 0.70 |
| Pear | ≈ 0.88 | ≈ 0.74 |
| Rectangle | ≈ 1.00 | ≈ 0.82 |
| Inverted triangle | ≈ 1.12 | ≈ 0.80 |
| Apple | ≈ 1.02 | ≈ 0.95 |
These are style categories about proportion, not size and not health. None of them is better than another.
Questions people ask
Which measurements do I need?
Bust, natural waist and full hips, all taken with a soft tape held level. Add a quick mirror check of your shoulders against your hips.
What is a waist-to-hip ratio?
Your waist measurement divided by your hip measurement. Here it is used only as a style proportion: lower numbers mean a more defined waist.
