Nude lipstick for your undertone (cool, warm, neutral, olive)

How to find nude lipstick for a cool undertone, a warm one, neutral or olive skin: start from your own lip color, then match undertone and depth.

The right nude lipstick looks like your own lips on a good day: close to your natural lip color, about one shade deeper, and in your undertone. For a cool undertone that means rosy or mauve nudes; for warm, peachy, caramel or honey ones; for neutral, rose-beige; for olive skin, rose-brown with a touch of warmth. Depth matters as much as undertone, because a nude lighter than your skin erases your mouth instead of flattering it.

If you are not sure which undertone you have, the Color Season Quiz settles it along with your depth and clarity.

Start with your own lips

Stand at a window in daylight with bare lips and look at their color. Is it pinker, browner, more peach or more mauve than you expected? Hold the bullet or the wand next to them, not against your hand. The skin on the back of your hand has a different color from your face, so swatches there mislead.

Your nude is roughly your lip color plus one: the same family, a step deeper or a little more saturated. That keeps the mouth defined without making it the focus. If two candidates look similar, pick the one whose temperature matches your lips and skin, which the table below sorts out.

Within each family, the lighter shades suit fair skin and the deeper ones medium and deep skin. Depth is the next section.

Olive skin: the underserved case

Olive skin adds a green-gray cast to a yellow or golden base, which is why both “warm” and “cool” nudes can look slightly off. Pink-beige nudes can look chalky against it; yellow-beige ones blend into the yellow and bring out the green. What usually works is a nude with some red-brown in it, such as rose-brown or a muted terracotta. Red counters the green, and the brown keeps it from looking bright.

Go a little deeper than you think. Olive skin often makes pale nudes look gray. The olive undertone guide covers the rest of the palette.

Depth: why some nudes erase your mouth

A nude only works if it is darker than the skin around your lips. When a lipstick is the same depth as your skin, or lighter, the lip line disappears and the face looks flat. That is the same failure that makes beige clothing wash some people out, set out in colors that make you look washed out.

So match the nude to your depth as well as your undertone. Fair skin can wear a pale rose-beige; medium skin needs a mid rose-brown or caramel; deep skin needs a deep nude such as cocoa, chestnut or deep berry-brown, which is still “nude” because it sits close to the lips’ own color.

Testing a shade

Apply the lipstick on clean lips, step back from the mirror to arm’s length, and check two things in daylight. Your mouth still reads as a mouth, not a gap. Your skin looks even, with no yellow or gray cast around the lips.

If you wear foundation, keep in mind that its warm or cool label describes your skin’s surface and may not match the undertone you use here; foundation undertone vs color season explains why. For shades beyond nude, lipstick colors for every color season covers each of the twelve seasons.

Questions people ask

What nude lipstick suits a cool undertone?

Rosy and mauve nudes: rose-beige, dusty pink and mauve-brown, deepening to berry-brown on deep skin. Peachy and orange-beige nudes tend to look chalky or yellow on cool coloring.

What is the best nude for olive skin?

A rose-brown or muted terracotta nude with a little warmth and some depth. Yellow-beige and very pale nudes tend to bring out the green-gray cast and make olive skin look sallow.

How do I find my perfect nude lipstick?

Look at your bare lips in daylight and choose a shade about one step deeper, in the same undertone. Test it on your lips, not your hand, and check that your mouth still stands out from your skin.
