Rectangle body shape: dress the line, don't fake the curves

A rectangle body shape has balanced bust and hips and a gently defined waist. How to dress it with structure, vertical lines and smart waist definition.

A rectangle body shape has bust and hips of similar width and a waist that is only gently defined. It is often called athletic or straight, and it is one of the easiest shapes to dress, because clean, tailored lines sit on it exactly as designed.

The common advice is to “create curves”. That works sometimes, but it is not the only option, and it is often not the best one. You can also dress the line you have.

Two ways to dress a rectangle

1. Dress the line. Lean into the straight silhouette: tailored trousers, straight-leg jeans, shift dresses, long blazers, column dresses, crisp shirts. This looks modern and deliberate, especially in solid colors and good fabric.

2. Define the waist, gently. Add shape where it is easy: a belted coat or blazer, a wrap top in a fabric with some body, a skirt with a little flare. The trick is structure. Soft fabric pulled in with a belt rarely creates a waist; a tailored seam does.

Structure creates shape. Stretch only follows it.

What to handle with care

  • Very clingy jersey shows a straight line plainly; that is fine if you want it, less so if you want curves.
  • Boxy, oversized everything can swamp the frame; keep one piece fitted.
  • Belts on soft knits tend to bunch rather than define.

Make it yours

Shape is half the picture. Color decides what people see first, and a rectangle frame carries bold color blocking well. Find your palette with the Color Season Quiz, and confirm your shape with the Body Shape Calculator if you have not measured yet.

Questions people ask

Should a rectangle body shape always wear a belt?

No. Belts work well on jackets, coats and dresses with some structure. On soft knits they can bunch. Many of the best rectangle outfits use straight lines with no waist emphasis at all.

Do peplum tops work?

A gentle peplum adds shape at the hip and suggests a waist. Keep it short and the fabric structured; a long, floppy peplum just adds bulk.

Which dresses suit a rectangle shape?

Shift dresses, sheath dresses with darts, wrap dresses in fabric with some body, and slip dresses on a straight, slim frame.
