A round face is almost as wide as it is long, widest at the cheekbones, with a jaw that curves instead of turning a corner. In numbers: a length-to-width ratio between 1.10 and 1.30, and a jaw at roughly 80 to 92 percent of the cheekbone width. The Face Shape Calculator checks all of this from four measurements.
Round is a styling category, one of seven reference outlines in the face shape chart, not an anatomical type. It describes how the face reads at a glance, which is what hair and frames work with.
How to tell if you have a round face
Measure forehead (A), cheekbones (B), jaw (C) and length (D) with the method in the measuring guide, then divide each by B.
| Ratio | Round: most typical range | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| A/B (forehead) | 0.86–0.98 | Forehead a little narrower than the cheekbones |
| C/B (jaw) | 0.80–0.92 | Jaw clearly narrower, no sharp angle |
| D/B (length) | 1.10–1.30 | Face only a little longer than it is wide |
Widest point: the cheekbones. Both the forehead and the jaw sit inside the cheekbone line, the jaw a little more than the forehead. Seen straight on, the outline curves out at the cheeks and back in.
Length: short. The face is barely longer than it is wide. This is the number that separates round from oval, so take it carefully: from the center of your natural hairline to the bottom of the chin, with your head level.
The jaw: soft. Tracing the jawline with a finger, you feel a gradual curve from ear to chin rather than a distinct corner.
A typical round face: forehead 12 cm, cheekbones 13 cm, jaw 11 cm, length 15.6 cm. The ratios are 0.92, 0.85 and 1.20, and the calculator scores it 99 for round, 61 for oval and 60 for square.
One thing a tape measures that bone does not explain: soft tissue. Fuller cheeks widen B and can make a face read rounder than its structure. That is fine, because styling works with the outline you see, but it means your result can shift if your weight changes.
Round or oval, round or square?
Round sits between two neighbors and shares one measurement with each.
- Oval has a similar taper but a longer face, with D/B from about 1.30 up. A round face with a long chin, or an oval face measured with the chin tipped up, lands on the border. Round vs oval shows how to settle it.
- Square has the same length range. The difference is the jaw: on a square face it is nearly as wide as the cheekbones (C/B 0.90 or more) and turns a visible corner. Round vs square covers the corner test.
Hair for a round face
A round face is short and widest in the middle, so a haircut that helps it does two things: adds a little height on top and moves the strongest horizontal line away from the cheeks. In practice that means lift at the crown and a main length that falls below the chin. Hair that ends at cheek or chin level draws a line across the widest part of the face.
The cuts, the details to ask for and the ones that work against you are in hairstyles for a round face. For specific decisions, see bangs by face shape (curtain bangs that open at the cheekbones work well), where a bob should end and the 2.25-inch test for short hair.
Glasses for a round face
Frames do the same job as the haircut: add structure and a little vertical line. Rectangular and angular shapes contrast with the curves of a round face; small round frames repeat them. Width matters as much as shape: a frame much narrower than your cheekbones makes the face around it look wider.
Glasses for a round face goes through frame shapes, widths and the cat-eye question. Glasses frame size shows how to turn your cheekbone measurement into a frame width.
Earrings, necklines and brows
Vertical lines near the face lengthen it; round shapes repeat its outline. That makes drop earrings and pendants useful, and wide round shapes that sit at the jaw less so. Earrings for your face shape has the full breakdown. Below the face, V-necks and open collars add a downward line, while high crew necks and chokers echo the curve; necklines for your face shape adds neck length and bust to the choice.
Brows with a higher, more defined arch add lift to a round face. The brow shape guide shows how to find where your arch should peak.
