A round face is close to as long as it is wide, with the cheekbones as the widest point and a soft jawline. It is a youthful shape, and the goal of a good haircut is not to hide it but to add a little vertical line so the proportions read longer.
Check first that you are round rather than square: a square face has nearly the same width at forehead, cheekbones and jaw, with a defined jaw angle. The measuring guide takes two minutes.
The two rules
Add height at the crown. Volume on top lengthens the silhouette. A little lift at the roots, or a cut layered at the crown, does more than any amount of styling at the sides.
End the length below the chin. Hair that stops at chin or cheekbone level draws a horizontal line exactly where the face is widest. Let the main length fall at the collarbone or below, or angle a shorter cut so it is longest at the front.
Volume belongs on top, length belongs below the chin. Everything else is detail.
Cuts that work
- Long layers starting below the chin. Face-framing pieces that begin at the jaw or lower create vertical lines along the sides of the face.
- Angled long bob. Shorter at the back, longer at the front, ending past the chin.
- Side part. An off-centre part breaks the symmetry of a round face and adds a diagonal. Even a slight shift from the centre helps.
- Curtain bangs. Long, parted bangs that sweep to both sides frame the eyes without cutting the face across.
- High ponytail or top knot. Pulled-back styles work very well when the height is on top rather than at the back of the head.
Cuts that work against you
- Chin-length blunt bobs with fullness at the sides.
- Heavy straight fringes that sit just above the brows.
- Tight curls or volume concentrated at cheek level.
- A centre part with the hair tucked flat behind the ears, which can emphasise width.
Beyond the haircut
The same principle carries over. Angular or rectangular frames that are slightly wider than your cheekbones add structure. Brows with a defined arch lift the face, which is covered in the brow shape guide. V-necks and long pendants add a vertical line below the face, while chokers and wide crew necks repeat the round line.
