Soft Summer and Soft Autumn are the two seasons people confuse most, because their strongest trait is the same: softness. Both look best in muted, blended colors and both are overwhelmed by bright, saturated ones. The only difference is temperature. Soft Summer leans cool; Soft Autumn leans warm.
The test setup
You need daylight from a window, a mirror, bare skin, and your hair pulled back or covered with a neutral grey towel. Hold each pair of colors under your chin, one at a time, for a few seconds. Look at your skin, not the fabric.
What to watch for:
- The right color makes your skin look even, your eyes clearer and the area under your eyes lighter.
- The wrong color shows up as shadows around the mouth and nose, a grey or yellow cast, or redness.
Drape 1: dusty rose vs salmon
A dusty, greyed rose (Soft Summer) against a muted salmon or peach (Soft Autumn). Pink is the most revealing color for temperature, because it either matches the pink in cool skin or fights the gold in warm skin.
Drape 2: slate blue vs teal
A soft blue-grey slate (Soft Summer) against a muted green-blue teal (Soft Autumn). If the teal makes you look tired and the slate makes you look calm, you lean cool.
Drape 3: grey vs camel
A mid grey (Soft Summer) against camel or soft caramel (Soft Autumn). This is the neutral test: the neutral you will wear most often should come from the right side.
Two out of three on the same side is enough. Three out of three and you can stop wondering.

If the drapes still split, take the Color Season Quiz, which shows your exact position on the warm-to-cool axis and the runner-up season. Olive skin often sits right on this boundary; olive undertone explains why.
